RSS Awareness Day

RSS Awareness Day

RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is a format used to deliver information from regularly updated websites and pages. An RSS doc (called a feed) contains a summary or the full content from a website.

RSS enables you to stay connected with you favorite websites (www.Blogtogreat.com) without having to visit the site. Once you subscribe to my feed (or any RSS feed), you will automatically receive updates from the website that publishes the feed, whenever new content is released.

Click on my RSS feed to sign up and receive my updates.  Thanks

Learn from Other Bloggers

Some of the best advice is free --- you can learn from other bloggers in order to avoid making common blog mistakes.  These bloggers have written about their experiences, including their mistakes, to help others.  This makes it easier for you to avoid the same mistakes.  Below are some suggestions that I've found. Read through each and let the blogger know if they've been helpful.

1. How Not to Run a Contest. by Robert

2. Goals, Controls, Metrics. by Lee

3. Don't Underestimate the Commitment. by Andrew

4. Not Having Blog Posts Prepared for a Rainy Day. by Vivian

5. My Biggest Blogging Mistake.

Let me know if these help and if you have ideas and experiences of your own.

Your "About Me" Page

A great chance to convey what's going on with your blog is your "About" page.  Keep it simple, witty, concise, and accurate.  You're not writing graffitti here.  This page will be the cornerstone of your blog.  Don't bore the reader and don't tell a long story.  You'll want to explain your experience and reason for writing the blog.  Show the reader that they'll find exciting, original content on your blog.  This will entice them to return.  Make sure your e-mail address and contact info is listed and ask for comments, suggestions and ideas.  Find out what they want to hear about, your readers can be your best advertisements, so cultivate an audience that responds well to you.

Design Issues

One of the most difficult problems you'll face will be the look of your blog.  I've changed, re-changed, and revised countless times before publishing.  Get fresh blog ideas by researching what others are doing, and pull ideas together to create something original. Remember: You don't need the perfect blog to start!  You'll update and change as you grow.  Note the importance of color and how comfortable your blog is to the eyes.  Also note that certain designs appeal more to men than women and vice a versa.  WHO is your intended audience?  That's very important to know. There are also many blogs exclusive to the design phase (a few are listed below), refer to them for more help.  I prefer keeping the look simple, to not detract from my writing.  As for flash, limit it. And, Music: NO WAY, too many distractions from your writing.  A friend of mine was on a blog recently and no matter what she did, she couldn't turn the music off !!  She didn't stay long on that blog.

Step One-Blog Theme

An initial step towards successful blogging is determining the topic/s you will write about and the main theme of your blog. Let's first address the main theme.  There are blogs currently written on every conceivable topic including the daily thoughts and activities of the blogger.  You'll need to decide if you want to be an expert on a niche subject, or reflect and inform your readers on a broader topic. With broad themes, you should be able to reach a much wider audience.  This will help you get the steady flow of new readers needed to interest advertisers (if that's your goal).  However, if you are passionate about a particular subject (Pontiac race cars, knitting, South American rainforests, 19th century French politics, European soccer rules, etc), you may consider a niche blog to discuss your interests.  You can still attract advertisers interested in marketing to your defined audience.  If you're going to cover a lot of different topics, don't go overboard. Without any focus, you will become dependent on a random audience who happens to find your blog.  Decide what you're most comfortable with so that you're able to interest your readers and they are compelled to re-visit and build a relationship with you.  Such topics as, eco-living, 2008 presidential elections, movies, current events, humor cover a wide base with endless daily writing possibilities.  Pick what you enjoy and know, then run with it.

Before starting your blog, make up a topic list, I'd say have 25 - 30 topics listed.  I keep mine in a word doc, but I also have a dedicated blogging notebook that I take with me wherever I go. Try to write, in advance, as many posts as you can.  You'll find that when you do, after your edits, the posts will be much better than sitting down each day to come up with new ideas, write, proofread, revise, then post.

It's always best to be clear and concise, know who you are and what you blog represents.  It will evolve, and that's OK.
